Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah has invited the British government and its irrigation experts to provide technical assistance in strengthening and enhancing the capacity of Sukkur barrage to pass flow of 15 lac cusec.
The CM communicated this to the new British High Commissioner Philip Barton who called on him here on Monday. Talking to him, the chief minister said that water and energy were the central organs of the economy of this province. He said the deputy prime minister of United Kingdom had made his commitment during his visit to flooded areas of Sindh in 2010 to provide technical assistance to strengthen Sukkur Barrage and now the Sindh government was actively working on this project.
The chief minister said Sindh was agro-based province and water was back bone for agro-production as energy was for industrial and social development. He said without the source of water and energy they could not go ahead for the development.
He said that except Karachi, peaceful atmosphere is prevails in whole Sindh and many national and foreign investors including British companies are participating in the development activities in the province.
He said that so far Karachi is concerned we have launched targeted operation against the criminals to improve law and order in the economic hub of the country and a significant reduction in crimes has been recorded.
The chief minister said that new induction in police force is being made to counter the criminals effectively while equipment and vehicles are also being provided to the police. The British High Commissioner Philip Barton appreciated the efforts of the Sindh Government for maintaining law and order and said that the people of his country have old relations with the people of Sindh.
He said that his Government and private organizations of England taking interest in the development and investment in Sindh province. He said that water, energy and installation of water plants for safe drinking water were the area of their interest and said that they are ready to implement on the energy project aimed to generate 800 mw electricity from solid waste in Karachi not only to provide cheap electricity but create cleanliness atmosphere for the people of the city.
The British High Commissioner also assured the chief minister for conveying his message to the concerned authority to provide technical support required in strengthening of the barrage.
