Pervez says government determined to transform Pakistan into truly democratic society

The present democratic government was fully determined to transform Pakistan into a truly democratic society, conforming to the international standards of law and human rights practices.

Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Senator Pervaiz Rashid said this during a meeting with a European Union delegation headed by EU ambassador of EU Lars-Gunnar Wigemark here Thursday.

The Minister said that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz government would fulfil its international obligations with regard to human rights, good governance, labour and environmental standards as it considered them in the benefit of its own people.

Now Pakistan was a fully functional democracy where media was free, judiciary fully independent and the civil society highly dynamic and vibrant, the Minister added.

He said that Pakistan’s relations with EU were not only cordial but multi-faceted too.

He said that EU was one of the largest trading partners of Pakistan and had always provided humanitarian and economic assistance, particularly at the time of natural calamities.

The grant of GSP status to Pakistan would not only increase exports to EU but would also pave the way for economic prosperity and development in the country, he added.

The delegation appreciated the level of independence provided to media in the country and wished that democracy may further flourish in Pakistan.

The minister also thanked the EU countries for providing their support in granting GSP plus status to Pakistan.

Special Secretary Law, Justice and Human Rights Justice (retd) Muhammad Raza Khan was also present in the meeting.
