Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Thursday said the National Security Policy was in the final stage of formation which will help the government in combating terrorism and extremism.
The minister said this in his one-hour discourse to 170 senior civil and military officers, including 14 from other countries, participating in the National Security and War Course at the National Defence University (NDU).
He said, “Our enemy is vague and divided and our security policy is proactive in nature which will address the problems that are being faced by the country at present.”
He said the new security policy would have three components – secret, strategic and operational. He said the government initiated the dialogue process with the banned outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan in the light of decisions taken during the All Parties Conference, but regretted that a drone strike disrupted it. The process of dialogue was started with a genuine desire for peace, he added.
Nisar said that now the government has again started the process. He said, “We want a durable solution of the menace of terrorism and the use of force will only be our last resort.”
He said it has been categorically communicated to the US that drone strikes were counterproductive and should be stopped. This continues to be an irritant in Pak-US relationship, he said.
The interior minister said the media should proactively project the sacrifices of the forces in fighting terrorism. He said the government would make efforts to enhance the operational capability of the law enforcers.
He said, “NACTA will be our focal point for counterterrorism efforts and a joint intelligence directorate will be established under this agency for intelligence analysis and coordination among various intelligence agencies.”
His address was followed by a question and answer session.
