FO terms Indian army chief’s statement ‘provocative’

Pakistan on Thursday said that Indian Army Chief General Bikram Singh’s statement on ceasefire violation is provocative and said that Islamabad wants peace on the Line of Control (LoC).

At the weekly news briefing in Islamabad on Thursday‚ Foreign Office Spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said such statements are provocative and regrettable which spoil peace at the LoC. “Pakistan wants peace on the LOC,” she said.

Responding to the statement, Pakistan army’s spokesman said on Monday that it is contrary to the facts on ground.

“Pakistan Army respects the ceasefire agreement in letter and spirit,” it said.

After the meeting between the Director Generals Military Operations (DGMOs) on December 24, 2013, the situation along LOC has improved considerably. Such accusation and provocative statements are regrettable and counterproductive, the spokesman added.

Bikram Singh at the annual press conference ahead of Army Day in India said that his troops had avenged the deaths of Indian soldiers on the LoC and that the ceasefire at the de-facto border would depend on how Pakistan acted.
