Zardari shows up in Polo Ground case hearing, not indicted

Former President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday made a brief appearance before an accountability court bench hearing the corruption references filed against him.
The court adjourned the hearing till January 18.
Zardari arrived at the hearing amid tight security around the premises of the accountability court, private media channels reported.
According to reports, the court was expected to indict Zardari in two of the five references filed against him.
The former president’s chief defence counsel Farooq H.Naek requested the court bench headed by Judge Mohammad Bashir to present his arguments over the indictment of his client. However, the court adjourned the hearing till January 18 to present the indictment.
Zardari faces five reference against himself which were made by the Ehtesaab Bureau, a previous version of National Accountability Bureau, during Nawaz Sharif’s rule as the Prime Minister in 1997.
The references against Zardari were deferred earlier as he enjoyed immunity during his tenure as the President of Pakistan.
In Oct 2013, NAB pleaded to reopen the cases against the former president as he had stepped down and his immunity had ended.
The references filed against the former president include Polo ground case, SGS corruption case, ARY licensing case, Ursus tractors case and Cotecna reference.
