Russia on Wednesday blocked a statement by UN Security Council condemning the deadly airstrikes by Syrian forces backing President Bashar al-Assad’s forces and use of missiles and “barrel bombs” in towns, UN diplomats have said.
Being a strong ally of Assad, Russia had opposed a similar statement earlier on December 19 to condemn the government military attacking its citizens.
Three Security Council resolution condemning Assad and threatening sanctions against Syria have been vetoed by Russia as well as China.
A UN diplomat was quoted on Wednesday , terming the Russian proposed amendments to the statement “clearly designed to rob the statement of any reference to what has happened in Aleppo.”
The British-drafted statement sought to express outrage at daily airstrikes by the Syrian government in the northern city of Aleppo where it said more than 700 people have been killed and 3,000 injured since December 15.
Deadlock on the Security Council was broken briefly in late September when the body agreed on a resolution to purge Syria of its chemical weapon program.
Locals say that the aerial operation was one of the heaviest bombardments seen in recent years in North Waziristan which is considered hub of al-Qaeda affiliated militants after 2007 peace deal
