The US Department of Defence (DoD) has revealed its plan for new and improved unmanned aircrafts which will be equipped with stronger chemical weapons, according to a report by a UK-based newspaper.
The Unmanned Systems Integrated Roadmap revealed by the DoD states that the US is developing a technology that will enable the unmanned aircrafts to be equipped with improved sensors and navigational equipment as well as superior autonomous systems allowing the drones to make their own decisions during missions.
According to the roadmap, the DoD plans on cutting the costs of manual management of drones by equipping the aircrafts with autonomous systems. This means that within the next 25 years, skies could be patrolled by drones that can autonomously deviate from a set mission and hunt in ‘swarms’ according to the ‘laws’ laid out in algorithms and advanced sensors to govern their behaviour.
The technological advances will enable the US military be ‘more effective through greater automation and greater performance,’ the report stated.
