According to a poll result on Friday, more than three-quarters of Bangladeshis oppose the general election due to be held this week. The election is being boycotted by the main opposition.
A Bangladeshi newspaper conducted the survey and found that 77 percent of the citizens believed that general election is unacceptable without the participation of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
Another significant result of the survey showed that 37 percent of the respondent would vote for the opposition BNP if they are given a chance. The percentage of potential BNP voters is slightly ahead of the currently ruling Awami League.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ruled out the possibility of postponement of the elections She accused BNP leader Khaleda Zia of attempting to hamper the election.
BNP and around 20 allies have refused to participate in the general election after the PM rejected their demands to stand-down and let an interim government arrange the election.
Tensions in the political circle have lead to 12 months of bloody violence in which more than 140 people have been killed across the country since late October.
