The participants of a conference Tuesday stressed upon active participation of women in local government (LG) polls so that development in the resolution of women folk problems and strengthening of democratic system in Pakistan could be done.
Sharing their views at the one-day conference on Effective Participation of Women in Political System and Local Governments Elections, the women development activists said that without active participation of women in political activities, neither democracy nor country’s progress dream could come true.
Addressing the conference, Punjab Minister for Population Welfare Zakiya Shahnawaz said that government intended to resolve issues of women development and prosperity including their participation in practical politics on priority basis and for the purpose, government initiated several steps. She added that government is keen to include women in the feminine development at local level and also involve other members of society in the movement for women empowerment.
The minister urged the women to cast their vote on priority basis so that a competent local level leadership comes to the front which can play role in solution of women problems at local level. She said that government is eager to enhance women representation in the policy making process besides enhancing development budget for the women folk.
Addressing the conference, Provincial Election Commissioner Mahboob Anwar said that ECP has always tried to accommodate women in the course of electoral process and would continue helping them in future.
The provincial conference was organized by the Strengthening Participatory Organisation (SPO) Pakistan with the theme “Effective Participation of women in Local Governments election” in which women from across the country participated.
