No apology to India, US collecting evidence against diplomat

US sources have denied any plans to drop charges against the Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade or offer an apology for her arrest, according to Indian media reports.

The prosecutors are collecting more evidence ahead of a 13 January deadline for her indictment, the reports have said.

India’s deputy consul general in New York, Khobragade was detained on 12 December on charges of visa fraud and underpayment to her housekeeper. She had denied all the charges and was released on bail.

She was handcuffed and strip-searched after a complaint from her maid.

Her arrest has led to a diplomatic row and outrage in India and USA was demanded to apologize from India over her alleged “humiliation”.
