Punjab Governor Chaudhry Sarwar said Friday night that improving relations with the European Parliament was imperative to boost the country’s exports.

Addressing a dinner hosted in his honour by the Pakistan Denim Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PDMEA), Chaudhry Sarwar said if there was a desire to benefit Pakistan through exports, the industrialists would have to work hard.

He said the European Parliament had accorded the GSP-Plus status to Pakistan which would increase the country’s exports tremendously and it would be able to achieve its export targets.

FPCCI President Zubair Ahmed Malik, FPCCI’s president-elect Zakaria Usman, Yaseen Sadiq, KCCI President Abdullah Zaki, industrialist SM Muneer, Munir Sultan, Mian Zahid Hussain, Gauhar Aijaz, PML(N) MNA Ramesh Kumar, Farrukh Mazhar, Dr Mirza Ikhtiar Baig, Mirza Ishtiaq Baig and others also addressed.

The Punjab governor said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had decided that industrial sector in Punjab would be provided natural gas twice weekly which would benefit industry in Punjab.

Well known industrialist SM Muneer said lauded Punjab Governor Chaudhry Sarwar for his efforts to achieve the GSP Plus status for Pakistan. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was fortunate to have a governor like Chaudhry Sarwar, he further said.

MNA Ramesh Kumar suggested of setting up an economic forum headed by the prime minister to support Pakistan economy. He said through this forum the industrialists would get an opportunity to consult the prime minister directly which would help industry to make fast progress. He said peace had been restored in Karachi due to positive policies of the PML(N).

The government lacked resources to overcome energy crisis, therefore, the business community should step forward and take part in the power generation, he said.

“The GSP should not be seen as an opportunity to the textile sector as over 6,000 products will enjoy lower tariffs in the EU which can be used to diversify exports,” said Zubair Ahmed Malik.

He warned that the GSP scheme was linked to good governance which must be ensured by the government at any cost.
