A severe ice storm on Sunday will be causing a dark Christmas in Canada and the northern US as thousands of households in the region have no electricity.

About 400,000 households in Canada and 280,000 in the US state of Michigan had no electricity until Monday while in Toronto, authorities have said that power will be restored for most residents by Thursday, but some may not have electricity until the weekend.

Several warming centres have been opened across the Canadian capital.

Temperatures are expected to fall as low as -15C (5F) in southern Canada over the next few days.

At least 11 persons have been killed due to the snow storm, five of which died in accidents on ice-covered Canadian roads.
