A mass rally by the Thai opposition is being held in Bangkok on Sunday in a bid to bring down the government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

A turnout of hundreds of thousands of protestors is expected by the anti-government campaign runners.

Protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban said he hoped Sunday’s rally will increase the pressure on Ms Yingluck and her government, Bankok newspaper reported.

Protestor set up stages at five main crossroads of the capital, attempting to block the traffic in the commercial centre of Bangkok.

On Saturday, main opposition Democrat Party announced to boycott the elections scheduled for February 2, 2014.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra had announced the election earlier December in a bid to end weeks of protests.

Thai army chief has warned that the political division in the country  could “trigger a civil war”.

The anti-government protests have caused Thailand’s most severe political mayhem since 2010. Four people have been killed in recent clashes.
