The International Court of Arbitration (ICA) has allowed the construction of Kishanganga Dam but has also backed Pakistan’s objections over the project in its decision, local news channels reported.

ICA was approached by Pakistan for the violation by India of the Indus Water Treaty which was signed by the two countries in Year 1960 as India’s 330 MW Kishanganga hydroelectric project would affect Pakistan’s 969 MW Neelum-Jhelum hydroelectric project.

The court backed Pakistan’s objections, ordering India to provide half of the dam’s water to Pakistan. ICA also ruled that India cannot take the water on a very low level in the dam.

The court after hearing the two sides announced its judgment in nine months.
