Indian government on Friday has filed a petition in the Supreme Court for a review of the ruling which upheld the law of criminalizing homosexuality in India.

The ruling by the SC earlier on December 11 had overturned a landmark decision by Delhi High Court in 2009 that had legalized gay marriage.

The government has pleaded the SC to re-evaluate its judgement as the government believes the judgement to be “violative of the principle of equality”.

“The position of the central government on this issue has been that the Delhi High Court verdict… is correct,” the government said in its petition Friday.

The 2009 High Court ruling received strong opposition from religious groups across India as they filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the HC ruling.
