Mandela laid to rest

Noble Peace Laureate and former South African President Nelson Mandela was laid to rest on Sunday in his hometown Qunu in Eastern Cape.

Mandela was laid to rest post the state funeral, military tributes and the traditional funeral rituals of his clan Xhosa abaThembu.

The 4500 state funeral attendees included South African leaders, Prince Charles, Reverend Jesse Jackson, Oprah Winfrey and Mandela’s family.

On Saturday, members of African National Congress paid their final tributes to Nelson Mandela in ceremony held at the Pretoria airbase.

According to agencies, the ceremony was attended by the South African President Jacob Zuma along with other ANC leader where Mandela’s coffin was laid draped with the ANC flag.

After the ceremony, Mandela’s coffin will be taken to his hometown Qunu in Eastern Cape for his funeral on Sunday.

Mandela’s body lied in state at the Union Buildings in Pretoria for three days where at least 100,000 people paid their tributes.

The 95-year-old former leader died on 5 December.
