Sufis’ teachings indispensable for peace: speakers

Speakers at a seminar from Indonesia and Pakistan said Sufis played a vital role in the society for humanity and had become powerful moral force for peace and harmony.

The seminar was organized by Research think-tank MUSLIM Institute on the topic of “Sufi Teachings of Islam as Teaching of Global Peace” at National Library of Pakistan, here on Friday.

Former Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Hamid Saeed Kazmi was chief guest on the occasion. He said Sufis serve Islam and humanity in all fields of life.

“They educate people who serve others and preach Islam,” he remarked.

Kazmi said people who are creating disturbance in current times do not belong to Sufism, as Sufis spread love and harmony not violence and bloodshed.

Speaking on the occasion, scholar from Indonesia Dr H Agus Maftuh Abegebriel, member faculty of Shariah and Law, State Islamic University, Indonesia said the hallmark of Sufis’ was devotion to Almighty.

They believed in Mahabbah (Love of God), Maa’rifah (Knowledge of God) and Tawhid (Unity of God), he added.

In Indonesia Islam was spread neither by political power nor by Muslim jurists, but it was done by Sufis, who were very tolerant to local culture, he stated.

Ambassador of Indonesia Burhan Muhammad said Sufis were the promoters of harmony and peace, which was the real face of Islam and they need to show this true face of Islam to the world by our deeds.

“Sufism has the power to attract people of different faiths and treats humanity equally,” he remarked. He further said peace is the universal message of Islam and Sufis with this power spread Islam everywhere and specially in Indonesia and Pakistan.

MUSLIM Institute Chairman Shaibzada Sultan Ahmad Ali said Sufis were representative of Islam and they strongly oppose sectarianism. They were promoters of harmony, peace, equality and purity of inner self.
