A new wave of violence broke out in Bangladesh on Friday as Jamat-e-Islami supporters violently stormed across the country in response to the execution of their leader Abdul Quader Molla.
According to police sources, two Awami League activists were killed in the town of Kalaroa while JI supporters torched pro state businesses, blocked roads and firebombed the train stations.
Molla was executed on Thursday evening for conviction of war crimes in 1971. His sentence had been upheld by the Supreme Court after a stay order on his execution which was due on Dec 10.
Increased unrest had already been anticipated in the country following Molla’s execution. Molla was hanged at 10.01 pm on Thursday, followed by reports of riots in different regions of the country.
In Dhaka, there have been no immediate reports of unrest .Meanwhile, a large number of law enforcing forces has been deployed across the capital in fear of violent disturbance after Friday prayers.
