Indian Deputy Consul General in New York Devyani Khobragade was arrested on charges of visa fraud in hiring domestic help and making false statements in an application for visa for the ‘babysitter and housekeeper,’ according to authorities.
Khobragade was later freed on a $250,000 (£153,000) bond after she pleaded not guilty in a court.
The Indian embassy in Washington stated that it has “conveyed its strong concern” to the US government over the action against Ms Khobragade.
India summons US ambassador
Meanwhile, in New Delhi India summoned the US ambassador to protest the arrest of its diplomat in New York, according to a statement by the Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson.
