Pakistan, Iran to move forward on gas pipeline project

Pakistan is going ahead with the gas pipeline project with Iran, according to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued on Tuesday. The decision was taken in a meeting between the two states’ officials in Tehran to fast track the project.

The Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project will be supplying gas from Iran’s gas fields to Pakistan. The project is estimated to be completed by the end of 2014. The project has been subjected to several drawbacks, primarily the US opposition to it.

The decision was reached upon in a meeting between Federal Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Iranian Minister of Petroleum Bijan Namdar Zangeneh held in Tehran on Monday.

According to the statement from the foreign office, both states are also agreed to ensure coordination and cooperation on the project as well as to create a road map for addressing the challenges before the two countries.

Both sides exchanged ideas while discussing various areas of cooperation emphasized on serious focus on bilateral economic relations.
