17 profiteers jailed, 48 fined

As many as 48 shopkeepers were challaned and a comobined fine of Rs 55,500 was imposed for overcharging in violation to the price list of essential commodities, while 17 profiteers were sent to jail.
The crackdown against profiteering is being executed in areas including Korangi Site, North Nazimabad, Saddar, Garden and Jamshed Quarters said a statement on Sunday.
Karachi Commissioner Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqi said that the crackdown is being conducted by the concerned assistant commissioners in their respective areas. A total of nine milk sellers, six fruits vendors, 20 vegetable merchants, four food items grocers, two chicken-sellers and six flour-sellers were challaned for violating the price list.
The Karachi commissioner has also assigned duties to the administrative officers at the time of sale of fruits and vegetables to check and control the artificial shortage of fruits and vegetables so as to provide relief to the masses.
The commissioner said the crackdown against profiteers will continue, till the time the sale of essential items as per the price lists is ensured.
