Officials to ensure presence at greengroceries during auction

The Karachi Commissioner Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui on Tuesday directed the assistant commissioners and other relevant administrative officials to ensure their presence during the auction hours, at all main fruit and vegetable markets and also on other essential foods items.

This, he said was crucial to strengthen the ongoing campaign against profiteers in the city.

The commissioner also vowed to take strict action against those indulged in adulteration, with particular reference to food items.

Meanwhile, Karachi division and district administration in its ongoing crackdown against the profiteers and challaned 117 shopkeepers and imposed a fine of Rs 169,000.

The commissioner office on sharing details of the past 24 hours exercise on Tuesday said these shopkeepers pertained to Jamshed Quarters, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulzar-e-Hijri, Liaqutabad, Gulberg, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, New Karachi, SITE, Manghopir, Bin Qasim, Airport and Model Colony areas.

Those challaned included green grocers, milk sellers, flour millers, chicken sellers, fruit sellers, grocers and meat sellers. The campaign is underway in Karachi as per directives of the commissioner for the past several months and has also led to the imprisonment of many of the chronic profiteers.
