Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday directed the Punjab inspector general (IG) to fix responsibility of “criminal negligence” and carry out neutral investigation into the Rawalpindi riots.
Chairing a meeting at the PM’s House, Nawaz directed the officials concerned to carry out legislation to finalise anti-cyber crime law to curb the spread of hate content on social media, ban the use of loudspeakers for hate speech and remove similar wall chalking across Punjab.
Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Information Minister Pervez Rashid, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Khawaja Zaheer, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah, ISI Lt Gen DG Zaheerul Islam, IB DG Aftab Sultan and senior officials of the Prime Minister’s Office, Interior Ministry and the Punjab government attended the meeting.
Punjab IG Khan Baig gave a detailed briefing over the incident. Nawaz said the police should have taken preemptive action to forestall the incident.
While admitting failure of police, Baig said the riots resulted in 11 deaths and 56 injuries. He also told the meeting that all deaths resulted due to use of firearms and refuted claims from some quarters about missing persons in the tragic incident.
Baig informed the meeting that nine perpetrators have been apprehended after their identification with the aid of video footage obtained from media organisations.
The prime minister expressed displeasure over the criminal inaction and laxity of the police authorities. “Law-enforcement authorities must not show any laxity in dealing with such incidents. Speech inciting hatred, stone pelting and firing are unacceptable crimes,” he added.
Nawaz said that criminal silence on the part of administration and police over the propagation of sectarian hatred through loudspeakers and wall chalking would not be tolerated. He also directed the authorities to take strict action against such elements.
While taking note of the negative role played by some people on social media during the tragic incident, Nawaz directed the authorities concerned to present draft the cyber law within next few days.
