Cop among two killed in Kohat sectarian clash

At least two people, including a policeman, were killed and several others injured when a sectarian clash erupted in Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The sectarian violence occurred when occupants of an Imambargah and participants of a protest procession clashed with each other.

There are conflicting reports about firing from both sides.

Kohat Deputy Commissioner Amjad Ali Khan Afridi termed the incident an outcome of misunderstanding.

Khan claimed the situation was under control, while efforts were underway for lifting of curfew that was enforced after the clash.

The DC said the administration was engaged in dialogue with elders from both Sunni and Shia communities for resolving the issue.

He confirmed two casualties in the firing occurred, adding that following the firing, some enraged youngsters set shops on fire and damaged property in Tirrah Bazaar.

However, the situation was brought under control immediately.

Soon after the violence in Kohat, trade and business activities in adjacent Hangu district also came to a halt.
