Ethnic Tamils staged a rare protest in northern Sri Lanka on Tuesday against the military’s refusal to hand back land after the war.
It is reported that this protest could cause a major law and order situation especially in a time when Colombo is prepared to host this week’s Commonwealth summit.
On the other hand, even after receiving telephonic death threats, the organisers of the protests along with hundreds of Tamils demonstrated against military in the former northern war zone of Jaffna, 250 miles north of Colombo.
One of the organisers, Sugirthan Somasundaram said that the heads of two slaughtered cows were thrown into his and other organiser’s home along with a written warning.
The Tamils are demanding the military to dismantle its high security zone in Jaffna which would allow them to return to their homes inside the specially designated area.
