Sticking to parleys despite the TTP rebuke

But where is the plan B?

Despite the TTP spokesman Shahidullah Shahid rejecting any possibility of talks with the government, the prime minister continues to be as sanguine as ever about the unrealistic prospect of establishing peace through dialogue. One simply fails to understand what inspires the optimism when past history of bargaining with the militants is replete with acts of treachery ad broken promises. The insistence on parleys creates a perception of weakness on the part of the government at a time when people expect it to act firmly to establish the writ of the state. With over 40,000 civilians and soldiers killed by the so called ‘confused and misled’ militants, how many more sacrifices are needed to remind the government of its responsibilities? One had hoped the PM would present his plan for peace before the National Assembly as well as an alternative if it failed to materialize. Nawaz Sharif has yet to speak out loud and clear in a tone befitting the head of the government. It is his duty to rouse the people to face the grim challenge bravely and to stand by them rather than get barricaded inside the PM’s house.

It could cause panic if the PML-N leaders were to start complaining in public that they were receiving threats. Leaders in KP faced the terrorist challenge without showing any sign of weakness. Now that the leader of TTP shura threatens Punjab with ‘exemplary revenge’, leaders of the province should face the situation with wisdom, dignity and poise. Meanwhile a total reliance on talks and reconciliation could demoralize and degrade the LEAs performance. As demonstrated during the daring DIK jailbreak, few would stick out their necks if the leadership was seen to be suing the terrorists for peace – whatever the cost.

It is unadvisable to keep the announcement of Gen Kayani’s successor pending till the last day. The explanation that the government does not want to undermine the authority of the present COAS is thoroughly senseless. The Pakistan Army is a disciplined force and there is no possibility of any newly-nominated general beginning to act as the COAS before the baton had been passed on to him. Keeping in view the grim challenges, it would have been appropriate if the incoming COAS knew several weeks in advance about the responsibility he was to be entrusted with to give him lead time for preparation. Now with two weeks and a bit remaining, there is no point in delaying it any further.

  1. I do not know about the print edition of 'Pakistan Today' as I live in Canada, but it's online edition has now nothing more than a source of irritation as it carries only stale and outdated news (some time for weeks the same lead story). I was once a fan of this newspaper but no more.
