US citizen Weinstein’s ‘assassin’ arrested

An alleged al-Qaeda suspect nominated in the US citizen Warren Weinstein’s kidnapping case was again arrested here on Thursday.

Weinstein was kidnapped from his house in Lahore’s ModelTown on August 13, 2011. An FIR was registered on behalf of SHOModelTown, Tajammul Hussain, against Aiman Al Zawariehi, Afzaal, Imran and Saifullah.

Saifullah was arrested soon after the kidnapping of Weinstein and was interrogated by security officers; however, he was released due to lack of evidence. After police gathered new evidence against him, Saifullah was again arrested on Thursday for his alleged involvement in the kidnapping of Warren Weinstein.

Weinstein lived in Lahore since 2006 and worked for J E Austin Associates. A biography of Weinstein on his consulting firm’s website said he has a doctorate in international law and economics with 25 years of experience in international development projects. He used to six foreign languages and was well known among donor agencies.

Weinstein was kidnapped just 48 hours before ending a four-year foreign assignment and returning home to WashingtonDC. In videos released subsequently, al-Qaeda confirmed they held Weinstein.

Saifullah has been shifted to an undisclosed location after his arrest for further interrogations.
