Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Chaudhry has remarked that the chief of Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) is a serving army general but he is fearful of taking the name of Yusuf Goth.

The CJP gave these remarks while presiding over a larger bench of the Supreme Court (SC) during the course of hearing of implementation of the apex court’s verdict in Karachi law and order case at Karachi registry on Thursday.

Attorney General (AG) Munir A Malik presented the report on arms and drugs smuggling that the court rejected expressing dissatisfaction over the same. The report on drugs and arms smuggling was worked out jointly by the Maritime Security Agency, Coast Guards and Anti-Narcotics Force. The CJP remarked: “Only law has been clarified in the report. If any action is being taken has not been mentioned therein. Why the FBR chairman did not mention that they are going to initiate action. No one has presented report about smuggling so far. It seems as if no one is serious in fulfilling his duty.”

“A customs appraiser pays Rs 2 to 2.5 million for getting himself enrolled, so who else than him will earn more money. Whosoever does not work must be removed as they are playing with the country?” the CJP observed.

He further said that an army general, head of the ANF, was fearful of mentioning the name of Yusuf Goth. The CJP observed: “A report was presented on Wednesday by the Customs Intelligence Agency and the Anti-Narcotics but names of Yusuf Goth, Sohrab Goth and some other areas were not mentioned in the report.”

The CJP said the FBR chairman’s report was of no worth and he asked him to read Ramzan Bhatti and Shoaib Suddal Commission report.

Tariq Bajwa said he would present report about the performance of his department separately. The CJP ordered that a complete report on how many customs parties conduct patrolling at night, number of customs posts and their location be presented in the court.

The CJP ordered the FBR chairman to evolve solid steps and strategy. “We want result before the fall of evening,” the justice demanded.

Justice Jawwad S Khawaja remarked: “Karachi can be saved only if drugs and arms menace is reined over otherwise this city will say us goodbye.”

Later issuing interim order, the court sought details of weapons coming to the Karachi Port and other dry ports of the country by today (Friday).
