The candidate of Asma Jahangir’s Independent Group, Kamran Murtaza on Thursday was elected as the president of Supreme Court Bar Association for the year 2013-14.
Murtaza secured a total of 1,032 votes against the candidate of Hamid Khan’s Professional Group Amanullah Kanrani who obtained 874 votes.
According to unofficial results, Murtaza and Kanrani secured 436-392 votes respectively from Lahore, 219-118 from Islamabad/Rawalpindi, 115-141 from Karachi, 28-16 from Abbottabad, 37-26 from Bahawalpur, 61-59 from Multan, 64-55 from Peshawar, 55-36 from Quetta, 5-19 from Sukkhar and 12-12 from Hyderabad.
The third candidate for the president’s slot, Rab Nawaz Raja bagged a total of 58 votes from all polling stations.
The slot of secretary was also notched by the Independent Group as its Asif Mahmood Cheema got 913 votes. His rivals Azmatullah Chaudhry and Mian Aslam secured 584 and 292 votes, respectively.
Abdullah Kakar was elected as the vice president from Balochistan seat by getting 1048 votes in one on one contest with Jahanzeb Khan Jadoon who bagged 767 votes. Professional Group succeeded in bagging only one seat in the bar’s new cabinet as its Rana Naeem Sarwar was elected vice president from Punjab. Muhammad Sadiq Hidayatullah and Syed Sardar Hussain had already been elected unopposed as vice presidents from Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, respectively.
Raja Muqsit Nawaz Khan and Raja Ghazanfar Ali Khan have also been elected unopposed as additional secretary and secretary finance, respectively. A total of 18,824 voters cast their votes.
