White Lies

Well, everyone and their aunt Zulekha had a thing or two to say about Bilawal’s speech from the week ago. It was trashed; it was lauded. Many thought his address, which pulled no punches and took on anyone and everyone, was an indication that the Boy Who Would Be King has arrived.

But that, however, is not as much of an indication of his arrival as a more recent event. You see, amongst the targets in his speech were “those who fly Kites from London.” Well, the PPP has just formally invited the MQM to join the coalition in Sindh. Now that’s politics. Not a fiery, rabble-rousing speech.

The wedding season is in full force before Muharram finally arrives and puts an end to merrymaking. Well, the amount of money that the high society types are throwing away at such events is ridiculous.

Event management has become a more than viable career choice. Forget the shamiaana chaps of yore; these guys come waltzing in to the functions in cars flashier than the groom could afford, do their thing and go. Their attitudes are reaching fashion diva proportions. Stuffy old classist grandmothers who wouldn’t want to socialise with this lot (“they’re help”) are now finding to their utter horror and dismay, that the feelings are quite mutual.
