Provincial Education Minister Nisar Ahmad Khuhro has asked the Supreme Court of Pakistan to avoid interfering in matters of local government elections which fell under the provincial purview.
Talking to journalists in his Sindh Assembly office on Tuesday, he said only the provincial governments were empowered by 18th amendment to authorise LG elections, and Sindh as such was fully prepared to play its part.
He said the Sindh government had forwarded its recommendations and dates to the Election Commission of Pakistan, and defended the possibility of LG elections being held under the 1998 census.
He cited the PPP’s impeccable record of boycotting none of the elections, save for one misguided by MRD (Movement for Restoration of Democracy) over which the PPP admitted its mistake of boycotting the election.
Replying a question regarding the possibility of inducting MQM in the government, he said the PPP did not believe in solo flights and would (could) take the MQM and all others on board in political mainstream.
Referring to the issue of promotions in Sindh police, he said all such decisions had been made on merit. However, all those police officials who had been discriminated against still had the right to prefer appeals, he added.
