No representative of former president Asif Ali Zardari and National Accountability Bureau (NAB) appeared before the accountability court of Islamabad that heard the references against the former president on Monday, prompting the court to re-issue summons for Zardari.

Accountability court Judge Muhammad Bashir heard the references against the former president.

During case proceedings, Additional Deputy Prosecutor NAB told the court that Asif Ali Zardari was not present in the country and summon notices could not be delivered to him.

The court has re-issued summons to former president Asif Ali Zardari in corruption cases, asking him to appear before it on October 29.

The court had reopened five references of corruption against the former president. The corruption references included Ursus tractors, Cotecna-SGS, polo ground, ARY Gold and assets references.

Meanwhile, the newly appointed NAB chairman, Maj (r) Qamar Zaman Chaudhry took notice of the absence of NAB officials from the hearing and issued instructions to ensure the implementation of the court’s order and directed the NAB prosecutor to appear for the hearing.

Earlier on October 11, the accountability court issued notice to the NAB prosecutor general in five references against the former president.

The court notice stated that Zardari’s immunity to trial ended with him stepping down from the presidency.

Former president Pervez Musharraf had withdrawn all cases against Zardari under a controversial amnesty deal in 2007. The Supreme Court had later cancelled the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) and reopened all corruption cases against Asif Zardari and nearly 8,000 other people, including political leaders and former government officials.

  1. This is merely an exercise in extracting himself from future law suits under a different and not a freindly government to him. Right now he has his twin brother from other parents Nawaz Sharif in power to protect him and make sure that the current charges are dropped and that he is legally innocent.
