At least two people, including a police officer, were killed and another 13 were injured when militants targeted a security forces vehicle near Salmankhel hospital in Badhabher area of Peshawar on Monday.
The targeted policemen were on security duty with an anti-polio team.
An official said the policemen had left the hospital along with the volunteers of the anti-polio vaccination campaign when they were targeted with an improvised explosive device (IED).
Doctors at LadyReadingHospital said they received 13 injured and one dead at the hospital. Lady Reading Hospital Chief Executive Dr Arshad Javed told reporters that one man later succumbed to his injuries while the condition of two was critical.
Senior Superintendent of Police Najibur Rehman told Pakistan Today that two people were killed and 13 injured. The killed included an assistant sub-inspector and a volunteer of the Bazidkhel peace militia.
Rehman said, “The policemen and anti-polio vaccinators were the target.” However, he confirmed that no one from the polio team was hurt in the attack.
Soon after the explosion, volunteers and people from the surrounding areas rushed to the scene and took the victims to hospital, where an emergency was declared.
The police cordoned off the area and carried out a search operation. They also succeeded in unearthing two more IEDs near the site. Both the devises were defused.
Dr Janbaz Afridi, chief of EPI Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, when contacted said the anti-polio vaccination campaign had begun on Saturday and the security personnel were targeted on the third day.
