The Supreme Court was told on Wednesday that the appointment process for chairman of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and managing director (MD) of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) would be completed by October 5.

Atique Shah, additional attorney general (AAG), told a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chuahdry that in the result of advertisement, 258 applications had been collected for the office of CAA MD and 24 nominees were in the run for the PIA chairmanship.

Complying with apex court’s orders, a commission had been formed that scrutinised the names of candidates, he added

Raja Basheer, counsel for PIA, informed the bench that the commission would select three names and the prime minister would finalise one of them.

To a query, he informed that the CAA secretary was holding the office of acting PIA chairman.

The chief justice remarked that transparency must be kept in mind while appointing both officers and directed the AAG to file compliance report on the next date of hearing.

The bench adjourned further hearing of the case for two weeks.
