A division bench of the Lahore High Court Tuesday granted bail to Haji Nasir Mehmood, former MPA, after suspending his conviction by a sessions court in a fake degree case.
The bench ordered the former MPA to submit surety bonds of Rs 100,000 to avail the bail.
The division bench, comprising Justice Shahid Hameed Dar and Justice Muhammad Yawaar Ali, passed the orders on a bail application filed by Haji Nasir Mehmood.
Earlier, the petitioner’s counsel submitted before the court that District and Sessions Judge, Gujrat, Tariq Abbasi on September 10, 2013 awarded 18-month imprisonment along with fine to the disqualified MPA for submitting a fake graduation degree along with his nomination papers in the 2008 General Elections.
He pleaded the bench to set aside the sentence as the court failed to appreciate facts in the matter. The bench after hearing arguments suspended the sentence and granted bail to the former MPA.
On February 2, 2010, Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry, then judge of the Lahore High Court’s election tribunal, had declared Mehmood disqualified by terming his graduation degree fake on an election petition filed by his rival Imran Masood.
Mehmood had then filed an appeal with the Supreme Court against the election tribunal’s verdict. However, the three-member bench had not only rejected the appeal but had also ordered the Election Commission to get registered a criminal case against the disqualified MPA.
