Fight of the Generals

I recall a movie of the 1970s ‘Night of the Generals’ that we all enjoyed watching. Some of us watched it more than once. Here’s replay of the movie in a slightly different manner, call it Fight of the Generals. According to an editorial in leading English daily, two retired generals Arif Hasan and Akram Sahi heading various committees of the Olympics are trying to outdo each other. Arif Hasan has held the top portfolio of the country’s Olympics association for as long as I can remember. He doesn’t want to quit the cushy job that affords him free foreign jaunts in style and luxurious stay in world’s top hotels. While the two chairmen test each other’s mettle, the poor sportsmen feel as if they are the grass being trampled by two elephants gone amok. Whether it is admirable that retired generals want to die with their boots on or not, but they always fight a rearguard action before quitting for good. We are watching with bated breath which of the two outmanoeuvres the other.

  1. Why should Pakistan Olympics Comm be headed by Khakis. As it is they are over exposed and taking the flak for it. The NDMA is unable to undertake relief operations on ground in Baluchistan for earthquake victims, because the organization is headed by a general. Perhaps it is time for our retired khakis to take a back seat. Hockey has been ruined by likes of Qasim Zia, Akhtar Rasool, Arshad Ch, while cricket handed over to a journalist. For the sake of sports in Pakistan let Jehangir Khan become head of Pakistan Olymics.

  2. Remember, a General knows all, a Brigadier knows somewhat, a Colonel knows little, and Majors and Captains are greenhorns. A good retired General would never take a back seat; he would rather like to go on kicking until lowered six feet deep down. Were a ‘bloody civilian’ pitched against a General, he would have been biting dust by now, but in the ongoing fight between two retired Generals, only the one more mentally robust and crafty than the other will win. But if nature intervenes both might be humbled. Let’s watch the spectacle.
