At least 91 more dengue viral fever cases have been detected in Karachi on Monday as 1,520 cases have been reported this year so far, said Dengue Surveillance Cell Sindh.

According to provincial focal person for Dengue Surveillance Cell Sindh, a total of 1,749 cases of dengue fever had been reported in Sindh province. Some 1,520 were reported in Karachi, while 229 cases were reported in rest of Sindh this year so for.

In metropolis’s fresh detection, 34 patients were admitted to different hospitals and 57 were given treatment at Out Patient Departments (OPD) of various hospitals. According to the report, 52 patients were still admitted in Karachi while 38 were discharged.

In Hyderabad, 14 dengue fever cases were reported while in Thatta one patient to test dengue positive which swelled the total number of these cases to 106 in the province on Monday.

According to Dr Saqib Ansari, dengue was first detected in Karachi in 2006 as epidemic but soon after it became an endemic just within a couple of years. He said now patients were reported to have dengue fever throughout the year being more frequent in the months from July to January.

He said there were three genotypes of dengue virus and it had been observed that if a person gets infected with the one genotype and re-infected with the other, it tends to be more severe.

Dr Ansari said unfortunately, this year, the Karachites were observing more severe and complicated cases of dengue. He said dengue if manifested clinically it carries high grade fever and bone pains. White blood cell counts may also be found to be low that leaves patients prone to other infections, he added.
