Pakistan supports Afghan-owned peace process: PM

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to enhancing peace and stability in the region, and particularly in Afghanistan.

Meeting with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Nawaz said the Pakistan government would fully support an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process in the shared goal of a comprehensive reconciliation.

The NATO secretary general hoped that cooperation between Pakistan and NATO would continue to achieve the shared objective of peace and stability in Afghanistan.

He also praised Pakistan’s support in facilitating the transit cargo to and from Afghanistan through its Ground Lines of Communication (GLOCs).

The two sides also discussed collaboration including training courses to officers of the Pakistan Armed Forces to enhance their professional capacities.

The prime minister invited Rasmussen to visit Pakistan on a convenient date while he thanked Nawaz and expressed his desire to visit Pakistan in the near future.
