Role of institutions important for nation building: President

President Mamnoon Hussain on Thursday urged academic institutions to play their role in nation building to meet multifaceted challenges being faced by the country.

Addressing the ninth convocation of National Defense University in Islamabad he said that the higher academic institutions should promote moral values‚ ideological cohesion and offer solutions to some of the major challenges faced by the country today including poverty‚ unemployment‚ low growth rate and particularly the menace of terrorism‚ sectarianism and corruption.

He called upon the youth to play an effective role in national policy making through their research publications. He said, “Education is the only hope to lead our society towards socio-economic progress and prosperity,” he said.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment for promotion of education‚ the President said that the government aims to enhance literacy rate. “We are especially focusing on technical education in order to help youth stand on their feet,” he opined.

He said that the government is equally committed in promoting primary‚ secondary and higher education. He added that efforts are being made to provide equal education facilities to all. “Special emphasis is being given to neglected areas particularly Balochistan‚ Gilgit-Baltistan and FATA,” he said.

Acknowledging the services of National Defense University (NDU) in higher education and research work‚ the President said that NDU has assumed the role of a national think tank and is playing an important role in promotion of leadership.

Furthermore, he appreciated the NDU for successfully conducting workshops on ‘Afghanistan 2015 and Beyond’ and national security, adding that the input provided by the university has helped policy makers with important national decisions.

Earlier‚ the President gave away gold medals and certificates to the graduating students.
