Foreign Ministry Spokesman Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry has said sanctions imposed by the Unites States on Tehran over the nuclear issue do not apply to Pakistan’s gas pipeline project with Iran, as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif discussed energy cooperation with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on the sidelines of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.

Nawaz congratulated the Iranian leader on his recent election success and the two leaders discussed bilateral relations, including energy cooperation, their countries’ support for peace in Afghanistan and the challenges being faced by the Muslim Ummah.

Sharif said cooperation in the energy sector would “serve the interest of both the countries”.

The two countries agreed that Afghanistan’s neighbours needed to work closely with the Afghan government and support an Afghan-owned and Afghan-led political process.
