The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Central Executive Committee (CEC) on Sunday resolved that the party’s accounts’ audit should be done without delay so that allegations of embezzlement of funds are cleared.
A source told Pakistan Today that the matter of corruption by some central office-bearers of the party was raised forcefully during the meeting and a relative of PTI Chairman Imran Khan was accused of embezzlement.
According to an official PTI statement, “Once the full normal and special audits are completed, they would be made public and stern action would be taken against guilty party members.”
The CEC also approved Imran’s decision to contest the local government (LG) polls independently.
Addressing the meeting, Khan said the party must resolve its differences maturely. He also praised the parliamentary party for becoming a cohesive unit in the parliament.
Khan said the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) were working together and PTI was the only genuine opposition.
Hamid Khan gave a briefing on how the PTI constitution had evolved and said the objectives of the constitution reflected the party’s ethos.
The issue of dual offices was discussed as a part of the constitutional review and it became clear that neither the present party constitution nor the amended Political Parties Order 2002 restricted anyone from simultaneously holding a party office and a political post in the government. The CEC concluded that this point should be provided for in the party constitution.
The CEC unanimously passed a resolution, giving the party chairman the right to decide on the issue, through consultation, if any dual post was vacated, for the period up to the LG elections, after which elections would be held for the elected posts that had been vacated.
The committee also discussed the issue of discipline and supported Imran’s decision to conduct an enquiry and revoke the party membership of the party members found guilty of discussing internal party affairs in the media or those who had opposed PTI candidates in the elections.
The CEC agreed that Justice Wajihuddin Ahmed would head a committee which would address the grievances of party members regarding intra-party elections and the provincial elections in Sindh and Balochistan.
Reports were presented on the performance of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government and the extent to which its reform agenda had been implemented.
Reports on the PTI’s performance in Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan were also presented.
The Punjab and Sindh PTI presidents informed the CEC that they would be going to court against the 2103 local government acts of their respective provinces.
