India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Sangeet Som, who is accused of circulating a fake video that resulted in the communal riots in Muzaffarnagar in western Uttar Pradesh earlier this month, said on Saturday that he has decided to surrender.

Som has been accused by the police of circulating a video that claimed to show the lynching of two Hindu Jutt boys. The footage was actually two years old and from Pakistan, the police said.

Dozens of Muslims were killed by extremist Hindus over the video which actually showed the lynching of two brothers in Pakistan’s Sialkot city.

Speaking to reporters in Meerut, Som once again rejected the allegations against him, adding that he decided to surrender after he learnt that he was likely to be arrested by the police today.

“I am a peace loving man. It is a fake case anyway,” he said.
