Detained Taliban leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar will be released today (September 21) in an attempt to facilitate the Afghan reconciliation process, stated a Foreign Office press release on Friday.

Baradar is one of the four men who founded the Taliban movement in 1994 and is believed to be a trusted aide of Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar. Baradar was captured from Karachi in February 2010.

Afghanistan has been pushing Pakistan for Baradar’s release, saying it would prove useful in negotiations with the Taliban militants prior to the 2014 United States and NATO forces withdrawal from the war-torn nation.
