No foreign security company allowed to operate in Pakistan: Nisar

The National Assembly was informed Monday that no foreign security company was allowed to operate in the country under the prescribed criteria for private security companies.

Minister for Interior Nisar Ali Khan told the House during question hour that if any company was illegally operating in the country, strict action would be taken against those who issued visas in this regard.

To a question, he said there was a complete ban on the issuance of fresh licences for weapons for the last three months. He said during the last few years, 70,000 licenses were issued that have resulted in the increase in the crime rate.

The interior minister said all cases of issuance of licenses where fee had been deposited before June 20, 2013 were being processed.

To a question, the minister said 98,000 illegal foreigners, mostly Afghans, were residing in the suburbs of Islamabad and the government had taken a number of steps to regularise their activities and for their repatriation.

He said the district administration had been directed to approach the UNHCR for repatriation of Afghan refugees residing in the jurisdiction of ICT and the registration process was also underway.

To a question, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Shaikh Aftab Ahmad told the House that Net Foreign Direct Investment had been adversely affected by the law and order in the country.

He said Net FDI has declined from $3,719 million in 2008-09 to $820 million in 2011-12.

He said, however, Net FDI had again started increasing and during the year 2012-13, Net FDI inflow received was $1,447 million in 2012-13, which was 76 percent higher than the previous year.

He said government was offering competitive incentives through investment policy to attract direct investment in the country, adding that initiatives included Promulgation of Special Economic Zones Act, 2012 for industrial clusteralisation in the country, investors’ facilitation services by Board of Investment and nvestment promotion campaign by holding of investment conferences in countries having potential of investing in Pakistan.
