Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan has decided to quit the post he has held since December 2002 over the targeted operations conducted by the law enforcement agencies in Karachi.

Sources said Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM)’s top leadership told the governor to quit the office.

A private television channel has reported that the President House received Ishrat’s resignation on Saturday.

Following the protest by the MQM against the targeted operation in Karachi, the governor left for Dubai on a private tour after tendering a plea of leave for an unspecified period of time.

When approached for comment, the Governor House remained non-committal over the date of the government’s return.

This is the third time that Ishrat has decided to step down from his post. Previously, he had announced to leave his post in June 2011 and later in February 2013.

Dr Ishrat assumed office in December 2002 and is the youngest and longest serving Sindh governor of Pakistan.

The resignation came amid protests by the MQM against the ongoing targeted operation in Karachi, the violence-hit provincial capital.

The operation, which the MQM has dubbed as a one-sided action against its office bearers, is being conducted by the Sindh government.

Rangers have conducted several raids in the city and have arrested many suspected criminals, including MQM members, during the raids.
