The judge hearing the case of the four men convicted for fatally gang raping a 23-year-old student on a bus in New Delhi last December, sentenced the culprits to death on Friday.
Judge Yogesh Khanna said the case fell into the “rarest of the rare category”, which justified capital punishment.
“In these times when crimes against women are on the rise, the court cannot turn a blind eye to this gruesome act,” he said.
All the four suspects were teary eyed as they entered the cramped room dressed more smartly than on Tuesday when they were convicted of a string of charges including murder and gang rape.
One of the men, Vinay Sharma, broke down in tears and cried loudly as the sentence was announced.
As the news broke, crowds inside the building and outside the courtroom roared with cheers and applauded the judgement.
The prosecution team congratulated each other, with lead lawyer Dayan Krishnan saying: “We did our job. We are happy with this sentence.”
The father of the victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said the family was also satisfied as he left with his wife and sons.
“We are very happy. Justice has been delivered,” he told reporters inside the court.

If India starts awarding death sentence to rapists, soon their population will reduce to mere 1%.
Don't get ahead of yourself,it ain't all that different in Pakistan, the only difference is,its not reported in Pakistan because of the so called honor.Regardless, this should concern every person in Pakistan and India,we all have mothers, daughters and sisters at home,I just cannot imagine a woman/girl or even in some cases(in Pakistan)a little girl going through this.

Good justice. Had this happened in our country the judges would have asked for four witness. Our judiciary should learn something from Indian judges who neither poke their noses in political matters nor they set prices of daily commodities..They are also not media hungry.
Not true. The Islamic law is not in force in Pakistan. If Islamic law was in force in Pakistan, no criminal would dare commit such heinous act.
Do you want maulvis running the country or enforcing the sharia law? just look at Saudi Arabia, the royals run the country and play GOD with peoples lives. If Pakistan can ever find a balance between Islam and rule of law,may be people will have a chance. But in reality, there is no law,no order, the SC and the CJP acts like MR.Power hungry, the government, well all they ever do is talk just like all the governments that come into power before them.Back to the actual issue being discussed here,we got to protect the rights of children, women and minorities in both the countries, and more importantly, hold the people accountable who fail to enforce the laws who by the way are elected by us the people. As for the so called Islamic law, there is no fear, most all hide behind the cover of religion do whatever they want.
This is result of public angre. Many such incidents happend earlier nothing happend.
