US welcomes Pakistan’s decision to release Mullah Baradar

United States has welcomed Pakistan’s support for the Afghan peace process.

US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan James Dobbins speaking at Atlantic Council in Washington lauded the efforts of Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Shariff to engage Afghanistan and strive towards peace and prosperity in Pakistan’s neighbouring country.

He welcomed Islamabad’s decision to release a top imprisoned Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Baradar as it would further accelerate the Afghan reconciliation process.

James Dobbins reaffirmed US commitment to a long term productive engagement with Pakistan following the United States’ 2014 drawdown from Afghanistan.

He said that The U.S. is interested in strengthening relations with Pakistan and an independent Afghanistan.
