The Interior Ministry is expected to take some important decisions on empowering rangers to control the worst law and order situation in Karachi.

The efforts to empower the Rangers are being exercised in light of the recent meeting chaired by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, during which he expressed concern over the law and order situation in Karachi and called for appropriate ways to handle it.

Sources privy to the ministry said in this regard, the ministry is in continuous contact with the interior authorities of Sindh.

The constitutional committee for monitoring the Karachi situation has also despatched its recommendations to the authorities concerned.

The expected decisions include giving more powers to the rangers to handle the terrorists’ activities in the city. The Rangers, in collaboration with the police officials, would be empowered to prepare and register cases against the terrorists, extortionists and target killers.

The detainees would be tried in special anti-terrorism courts to ensure the early completion of hearings and to finalise the sentences for the terrorists.

The PM directed the authorities concerned not to show any leniency regarding this issue.

According to sources, the prime minister has given the green signal to the proposed increase in the Rangers’ powers.

However, measures to empower the law enforcement agencies require constitutional amendments that can only be done at the federal level or through the provincial assemblies.
