A Punjab University (PU) foreign student was arrested on Thursday for having alleged links with a banned outfit.

Intelligence agencies raided the varsity’s hostel and arrested a foreigner allegedly belonging to the al Qaeda militant group.

Intelligence sources said an al Qaeda commander who had come to Lahore for leading a ‘Fidayee Mission’ was provided shelter by the students of a religious party’s subsidiary organisation.

Sources said the accused, an expert in subversive activities, had come to Lahore from the country’s tribal areas to lead some deadly missions in the city. However, he was arrested before he could do any damage and was shifted to an undisclosed location for investigation.

Sources said the university’s hostel management did not cooperate with law enforcing agency during the raid.

Security officials and the PU administration did not disclose the student’s identity.
