279 traffic wardens were dismissed by the Punjab government over fraudulent activities here on Sunday reported by SANA.

After going through a scrutiny of all documents submitted by traffic wardens across Punjab, including birth certificates, education documents, 279 were found guilty of forgery and other malpractices. The government also registered cases against them.

The issue came to surface when authorities formed a committee after some traffic wardens protested against their non-promotion.

366 educational documents and domiciles were found fake during scrutiny after the wardens were asked to re-submit their documents.

A case was also lodged with the Chohang Police Stations against the wardens and a separate committee was formed to look into the matter.

Chief Traffic Officer, Captain (retired), Sohail Chaudhry said that 279 out of 1,925 traffic wardens confirmed two years ago have been discharged, as they were found to take recourse to forgery for getting their names included in the seniority list for promotion.

On the other hand, some of the traffic wardens staged demonstration and demanded their reinstatement.
